Tailwheel Endorsements & Training
Don't let anyone tell you that flying a taildragger is difficult. Sure, it requires some skills that aren't as commonly taught as they were in the 1940s, but if you can keep an airplane straight, you can fly a tailwheel. If you're a little rusty at that, we can help too!
How can we help?
We have instructional experience in a wide variety of tailwheel-equipped airplanes (our most commonly-flown airplanes are listed below). You can have your airplane brought to our facility in Waco, Texas, or with prior scheduling one of our instructors can travel to your location!
-Piper J-3
-Aeronca 7AC Champ
-Cessna 140
-Cessna 150/150
-Cessna 170
-Legend Cub AL-3, AL-11, and AL-18
-Carbon Cub CC-11-00
What does it take?
A typical tailwheel endorsement customer requires between 6-8 hours of flight training and 1-2 hours of ground training to achieve the tailwheel endorsement. This can be done over the course of a few days or a few weeks, depending upon your schedule and availability.
What all do I learn?
Part 61 requires that we teach you both three-point and wheel landings, and common sense and safety dictate that we get you competent and confident at both types. Many tailwheel pilots hang their hat on one of those two types of landings, but a properly-trained tailwheel pilot can execute either one on command and intentionally.
Either way, this isn't a quickie course. Done right, tailwheel training will complement your flying skills and give you an experience you'll want to share with your friends!
Where do I learn?
Taildraggers are most at home on dirt and turf airstrips, but in today’s world many of us must operate from paved strips. When you complete your tailwheel training with us, you’ll be comfortable and competent in both environments.
Who does the teaching?
Our tailwheel training is provided by Owner & Chief Pilot Aaron Dabney. Dabney has accrued over 1,000 hours of tailwheel time, most of it teaching, and literally grew up in the back seat of a J-3 Cub.
Can I rent your airplane to train in?
At present, we provide tailwheel training only in client-owned aircraft. We'll work with you to determine if having your aircraft delivered to our location, or us coming to you, works best for your individual situation.
